You should be able to talk with any doctor you go to - an OB/GYN can prescribe them. This isn't their specialty - they should know what you can and can not take during pregnancy (as well as dosage), but they may not know about every anti-depressant drug out there.
The other thing is sometimes you have to find the right combination of drugs. That's when a psychiatrist would be better, but again, any medical doctor can prescribe for you.
They might make some other non-medical suggestions, for instance going to see someone or checking to make sure something else medical isn't going on, especially if you haven't had any episodes before. Did something happen about 4 months ago?
Good luck. I'm glad you're looking for an answer rather than hoping it will go away - 4 months is a long time.

You can go see your Family Doctor to talk about your depression. He/ She can prescribe an anti-depressant to help you cope better on a day to day basis , lift your mood...also you can contact your local hospital or mental health office and a phycologist and or phyciatrist (not sure on the spelling sorry)...can help you through medication along with counselling to get to the root of what is causing you to feel this way.
Depression is nothing to mess around with, and if you've been depressed for the past 4months..You should definately go see either your Family doctor or call the hospital and ask.
Best of Luck* God Bless*~
The first step in the right direction..Is to ask for Help* now Seek the help...I hope you get to feeling much better * Takecare*

My GP gave me a prescription for anti depressants once, and I didn't even ask about them. LOL But she did say they would cause a loss of appetite, so I got them.
Took them about a year (she kept upping the dose) then I was going to lose my medical insurance. These pills were $300.00 a month. So I weaned myself off them in a month. And that was not easy--some of those pills are very addicting. Not just mentally, but physically too. I had all kinds of weird nerve sensations in my arms and face.
So think about it before you get started on any of these pills. If you truly need them, go for it. But if you can make it through without them you would be better off.

if you're pregnant your obgyn will be the person. if you're not pregnant anymore, then your regular family doctor or a mental health professional. my obgyn offered them to me when i was pregnant but i declined. no one knows what they do to a baby in-utero long term. they are mostly safe for a DEVELOPING baby, but my question was always "what about the future?" i'd rather be miserable if it meant not putting antidepressants in my baby. now i look back and think maybe being miserable wasn't the best choice, but i know i didn't put anything into my baby i wouldn't feed hew now at 7 months old.
happynay, obgyn's CAN prescribe. psychiatrists are not the only ones who can. psychologists are pretty much the only ones who CAN'T lol.

Any doctor can prescribe you anti-depressants. Start with your Primary care doc and if possible he can refer you to a psychiatrist who specializes in that kind of thing.

First off, you need to contact your OB and explain what is going on. The OB will not prescribe an antidepressant since this can only be done through a psychologist. I am sure your OB can refer you to someone, since many women go through emotions during pregnancy and afterwards. I sure did. There are safe antidepressants that you can take during a pregnancy. I had taken them with my pregnancy and my son was born very healthy and has no problems, plus it helped me get through the depression.

For any mental health concerns, you should see a psychologist (also called a therapist, they can't prescribe meds) or a psychiatrist (who has a medical degree, so they can prescribe meds). As you posted this in the pregnancy category, I'm assuming you are indeed pregnant. If this is the case, make sure you disclose that to the therapist and speak with your ob/gyn.

Psychiatrist, if yo are pregnant or have post pardum deppression (baby is 12 months or younger) your OB/GYN or family doctor can also prescribe. Also many family doctors will prescibe it but for no more than 8 months then they send you for mental health. Best of Luck

You always have the right to request a certain medication to your physician. The Physician will do one or two things. 1- He/She may already know if your body will be compatible with the medication in question, or 2- will give you enough supply to experiment, with a follow up appointment in a couple of weeks to see how your body reacts to the new meds.
