such as when you have surgery, or c-section

I've had the procedure done by both genders when I had surgery. It didn't matter to me as long as they did it right. These folks see male and female parts all the time, so it's no big deal to them. Your surgical team's judgment is your best bet.

I have a preference for women Ob/Gyn's. I had a male dr. once and he had the Doctor/God complex. He was the kind of doc that practically pats you on the head and tells you not to worry your pretty little head. I brought in some questions to ask for my 1st pregnancy and he actually ripped the paper out of my hands and scoffed at my questions. It was as if he didn't think I was good, old, whatever enough to know the answers to those questions. He also dug his hand into my side where your ligaments stretch when I asked about the pain there as if to tease me. He said, "right here!! oh that hurts right here!!" Had he continued 2 seconds longer I probably would have smacked him. Picture you playing with your kids saying," oh it tickles right here!! Right here!! Oh no!!" as you're tickling them mercilessly. I was stunned everytime I saw him. Needless to say he was on call the night my daughter was born. Everything went fine but I wonder if I would have been even more at peace if I had my regular ob/gyn who I have been seeing since I was 17.
Now about male nurses - never had one and I think if it was concerning a broken arm it would be no prob. But, anything to do with gynecological issues I would want and request a female nurse. I also find it strange to ask another person questions about symtoms and pains and whatnot that they never have or will experience. I like asking my doc. - "have you ever felt ...... ?" or "have you ever had this happen?" and her being able to know what I'm talking about first hand not just because she read it in a book. And about the catheter - I will refuse unless it's really serious or I have an epidural. I had one and it was the most painful thing ever.

I would definitely prefer a woman. My OB is a woman. All of the Labor and Delivery nurses at the hospital where I delivered my son were women. So even if the OB were a male, it would have still been a woman to put the catheter in because there are no males on the maternity ward except a few OB's (at my hospital).

I had an epidural so the catheter was required. i didn't feel a thing. It took the nurse about 2 seconds.

Regards,
mari

Well I had a cathetor when I was in labour, and by the time they decided to put a cathetor in everybody but the janitor had a look at my crotch. It don't matter male or female the dam thing isn't comfortable either way!

I work in the health care field and I have seen both male/female insert a catheter. Most of the time there is so much going on that it doesn't really matter to the patient. As long as there experienced and knows what their doing that's all that matters to me.

For me it doesnt matter as long as they are good at what they do. My mom is and has been a nurse (l&d) for 30 years and trust me they look at your personal parts, as if it was an arm or leg they were looking at, male and female alike. So honestly it is up to you and your own modesty needs to decide, but trust me male and female nurses (l&d) see so many in a day that its no diffrent than looking at any of the rest of you.

my husband is in the medical field and i can tell you that it is not something guys enjoy. so i wouldn't request anybody i would let the nurse that is assigned your catheter do it. nurses are professional people who have received intense training. plus, think of how you would feel if you were or have been descriminated agains because of your sex. that is basically what you would be doing if you asked to not have a man do it.

I would request an experienced nurse/doctor. I wouldn't be to fussed about there gender just that they were going to get it right first try.
This is they're profession they don't see you as a "woman" more as a patient and they're job is to make you well.

I would prefer a female, although it doesn't really matter at the end. My OBGYN is a male and I would never switch to a female because he is the best.
