my friend is 31-32 weeks pregnant and has gone into labor several times. her cervix is sewn shut but the dr had to remove a stitch because she is dilating and the cerclage was getting painful. she is very scared because her contractions are getting painful and she's waiting for her husband to get home in the next few minutes so they can go to the hospital. if her baby is born tonight, what is the percentage of survival? her mucous plug has come out and now there is blood, but she doesn't know if it is from dilating with a cerclage or if it is a bloody show. someone please tell me survival rate at 31-32 weeks and what i can say to her to help her through.

she is waiting for her husband because they only have one car. she is freaking out all of a sudden and not thinking straight. she doesn't want to go to the hospital because she thinks it might be false labor and she doesn't want him to lose sleep if she's wrong, but i told her he is more worried about the baby being ok than getting sleep right now. she doesn't feel like pushing or anything like that, but i know she is in real labor. i think she may be in denial about this because she is so scared.

for some reason they have not given her steroids for his lungs. she trusts this doctor's every word but i don't. he seems lazy and indifferent. she needed my reassurance they would stop her labor tonight and give her steroids for his lungs. he is approx. 4lbs right now according to her ultrasound today.

hi, i'm the mom of a baby born at 29.5 weeks. the survival rate for her baby will be over 95%.. thats good news.. the rate of disabillities is pretty low after 30 weeks also.. however that doesnt mean it will be an easy road for her.. it really just depends on the baby to be honest tho.. My daughter just had everything go wrong for her, and had a ton of complications and spent 60 days in nicu, coming home on oxygen and monitors.. however while i was there, i saw many babies come in, some even born before 29 weeks gestation, that breathed on their own, and went home long before she did. you really just dont know what you are going to get with a preemie until they come out, as far as breathing ability, etc.. Most babies cannot suck/swallow at the same time well (for eating purposes) until 34 weeks so she can expect her baby to stay at the hospital until at least then.. sometimes longer.. like i said just depends on the baby and any complications they might encounter.. infections are common in the nicu and can set a baby back a few weeks. .I'm not sure what you can say to her to help.. if she has other kids offer to help out with them when she visits the nicu.. or bring food/dinners over, do her laundry, etc.. things that she will not have time to even want to think about with a baby at the hospital..

babies born today esp at a level 3 hosp or where a baby can be transported to have a approx 90%+ survival rate they are saving micro preemies as young as 23-24 weeks or approx over 500gm wt she has most likely already had steroids to help mature the lungs so it's 50-50 that the baby will need to be intubated hopefully just need oxygen support by nasal CPAP and then intensive care nursery support body heat regulation IV's nutritional support as the suck reflex is not strong enough yet, I too delivered my youngest daughter 25 yrs ago at 30 weeks long before the advances they have now also am the proud Grandmother of a 30week er now 15 mo. old. I am surprised that given the fact she had an incompetent cervix that required a cerclage they did not give her steroids but if she is not overly advanced in dilation they can still give her meds to stop/ slow down labor and give the steroids a chance just need 24 long hrs,, good luck,

I know how she feels. I am currently in the same boat I am 32 weeks and have been in pre term labor for a month. They gave me the shots for his lungs but he is also only 4 pounds they think also. They told me that as long as the baby can breathe and everything he could come home with me. So good luck and I will be praying for her
