How about the scientific classification system?
All living things are divided into different categories, from broadest to most specific.

The broadest category is somewhat new and called Domain. An example of a Domain would be Eukarya, which is the domain that humans belong to. (you make have heard of Eukaryotes)

Under domain is kingdom. Humans are classified into the Animalia kingdom (which is for all animals). There are also several other kingdoms, such as the plantae kingdom, which includes plants.

After kingdom comes phylum. For example, humans are part of the chordata phylum. (basically chordates have spines)

Following phylum is class, and humans belong to the mammalia class, which includes all mammals. Another class is insecta, which includes all insects.

After class comes order. Humans are of the order of primates.

Following order is family - humans are in the family of Hominidae.

Next comes genus - humans are of the genus homo

Finally, the most specific classification is species. The species of humans is Homo Sapien.

So overall, we have Kingdom; Phylum; Class; Order; Family; Genus; Species
If you need some way to memorize this order, a good device is King Phillup came over for ginger snaps.

You can look up this break down on the tree of life (www.tolweb.org) to get more precise examples. Also, there are mid-classifiers such as sub- and super classes, orders, and families, which add to the level of classification established by taxonomic rules.
