The first verse, in particular, contains some of the most beautiful lines in all literature. Not only is the song (Mignon's Lied) filled with yearning, the land of blooming lemons and glowing golden oranges are a reference to Italy.

It has been set to music many times, as is "Nur wer die Sehnsucht kennt, Weiss, was ich leide!" Again, it's full of longing and suffering.

It is a description of an imaginary land that is full of peace and beauty. It represents the speaker's desire to escape with his beloved.
