Australia v Pakistan Hobart 1999

Adam Gilchrist joins Justin Langer, in what probably became a defining test innings for both, coming together at 5/126, needing 369 for an improbable victory on a fifth day pitch against hostile bowling. Truly magical stuff.

There have been many memorable Aussie test victories which when they occurred seemed to be the best ever at that time.

However the recent Adelaide test takes some beating not so much in the victory itself but in the manner in which it was achieved.

The declaration by the captain was very brave but in hindsight correct as Australia needed that time to force victory.

This victory was achieved against an English team which played well and scored many runs.

The Aussies overcame the English with sheer power and determination to the degree that the English players simply wilted in the midst of battle.

I knew something special was about to happen when Hayden was interviewed during an evening recess and when asked if the match was going to be a draw he firmly stated that Australia do not play to draw, they play to win.

This in essence is what makes this victory great in that the Aussies rejected a draw and force a win. For the Aussies a draw really was never on the cards.

Poor England did not realise this until it was too late. Perhaps if the had understood the Aussie Psyche a little better they would have known the Aussie were going to go after them.

For the Aussies in an Ashes series, a draw is no longer good enough and is more of a loss then a stalemate.

This victory was a statement of that fact.

Any true cricket fanatic would have to consider the 2nd Ashes Test of the 2006/07 Summer to be the best Australian Test victory, which is my definite choice.

The last day was a complete turnaround. The Aussies dismissed the English with enough time to accomplish the run chase.

It was the true Aussie spirit, reflecting on the skill of the Australian Cricket Team.

For me, I would rate the victory in the 5th Test in the 1986/87 Ashes series as the best Australian victory.

Why?? and why is that memorable??

Because that was the match that marked the turning of the corner for Australian cricket. After going through the doldrums of the years since the last 3 prong retirement, this was the first major victory that many had tasted in their career. And look at what followed as a result.....

In 1987/88 Australia won the World Cup, announcing that it was back as a top team in cricket. Which lead to......

In 1989 Australia regained the Ashes 4-0, to announce themselves as the closest contenders to the Windies throne as world no. 1, which lead to......

.....after 2 previous series weakend the hold, in 1994/95 Australia beat the West Indies - in the West Indies at that - to claim the mantle of worlds best team, a mantle they have not relinquished since.

If this is a genuine question from Mr Langer...

Justin, when HAVEN'T there been memorable victories?

I'm 57 years young and have watched/seen most Tests since the early '60s. It would normally be assumed that at my age there would be earlier memories. Nup. No way.

When my family dragged me here from London in 1959, I was inserted into a small Mallee District town called Karoonda (SA). Couldn't play cricket, couldn't play footy. What I could do, was play 'soccer' and hockey. Neither of which was a local sport...

So, they made me the opening bat and bowler. Out for a duck and abused for a 'grubber'. My point?

Years later, I used to help out with District cricket. THEN, I understood cricket per se. The notion that it's all about teamwork and sharing a common love for the game, helped me in my own life. But...

I'd have to say Lillee and Thommo - Australia has the best batsmen in the world - but, at the time, it really was "Donder und Blitzen". Thus, the wins in the L&T period are memorable to the max!

If you're referring to this Ashes series, the best victory was the 2nd test at the Adelaide Oval, chasing such a huge first innings total by England, then to make the required total at better than 5 an over late on the last day was the best victory.
However, for me, the most memorable will be the boxing day test that just finished. Being a Queenslander and seeing Hayden and Roy take control of the game, especially with both under fire for their test spots, was very enjoyable. (Luckily they can bat better than they can fish.) Top that off with Warne's 700th wicket, and that'll be a game I'll remember for a long time. (Of course, Gilly's century in the 3rd test also deserves a mention.)

Sydney 2007 after winning the Ashes series 5-0

The last time the Ashes were won 5 - 0 was 1920-21 by Australia. For this team, it would be a fitting send off for Glen and Shane. This may be the last Ashes series for some other players, too. It is another 2 years to get to the next Ashes series.

Another good win was stopping the Poms get the 5th game in the Body liner series (Ashes 1932-33)

Edited at the end of the Sydney test:
Justin, the stats they showed of yours didn't include the fact you got your centuries as opening batsman. Openers are just to wear down the bowlers while the big scorers come in after you do your work. Extraordinary for an ugly duckling ;)
For you to leave Test cricket today made the Sydney test the end of an era. Good luck in future, mate, to you and your family.

In my opinion, the Adelaide Test in this Ashes series. That victory was by far the best stand-out win I have ever seen in the time I have been watching cricket. Not only were the bookmakers odds against Australia plucking a win from the air, but I think even the players themselves couldn't believe when they actually one that test.
