After World War I the Allied powers redrew the boundary lines of the middle eastern countries. So...essentially all the tension occuring there now can be traced back to that-since the majority of the problem is land dispute. Who truly owns the land...Iran, Iraq, etc. did not exist before WWI.

The origins of the problems are the Sykes/Picot Pact which was a secret agreement between Britain and France to divide up the lands of the defeated Ottoman empire afterWW1 and the Balfour declaration which was an announcement by a British cabinet minister that he would like to see a homeland for the jews in Palestine after the war. Both of these actions were illegal in international law.
After the war Britain administered Iraq,Palestine,Egypt and Transjordan (later Jordan).and France administered Syria and Lebanon. The boundarys of these countries were just drawn as straight lines on the map with no consideration given to ethnicity or tribal loyalties.
Arabia was considered worthless at that time as no oil had been discovered so it was left to ibn Saud to create Saudi Arabia from the poor desert tribes.
When a huge wave of illegal jewish immigrants came into Palestine after WW2 and formed terrorist gangs to force out the British and the indigenous population it gave us the situation we face today

During WWI, the British govt was already considering how they would carve up the Ottoman Empire. One plan was to have Palestine as a British posession. In Nov 1917 the govt. issued the Balfor Declaration, stating that Palestine would becme a homeland for Jews, and encouraged Jewish immigration. This is the beginning of the displacement of the Palestinian Arabs which is continued by the govt of Isreal today.
