i own a repair shop, and if you raise the hood you,ll see a sticker out there that tells where it should be set at,,you set it by removing the vacuum line from the distributor advance, and plug it off ,and loosen the distributor, and set it to the mark it says to ,from the sticker,,and that's it tighten the distributor back down ,and install the vacuum line, and your done, you,ll need a good timing light to do this with,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s..,have a good x-mas.,PS be care full and don't get caught up in the fan while its running, and your setting the timing,,and make sure the engine is fully warmed up.good luck.

First you should have a manual for that car you are working on. A 1976 should be a classic by now or close to it. You should be able to find a manual on the net. Timing can be done in two ways that I'm a ware of. one is with a standard timing light using the timing mark on the engine. The other way is with a trouble light that you connect to the coil and ground. Then turn the distributor. You need a book. You can check with your local library to see if they have one in the reference area. You can copy the information you need. You can also join a club or ask some old guy like me to show you...Good luck...

If memory serves....disconnect the vacuum advance ( take the hose off the dist ) plug the hose, start the vehicle, ( warm engine ) let it idle, timing light connected to #1 spark plug wire ( front plug on the drivers side ) point the light at the crankshaft pulley and you'll see the marks...loosen the dist hold down bolt ( 9/16...dist wrench works great for this ) and turn dist till the desired marks line up. tighten dist hold down bolt , make sure the dist didn't move on you...shut off the engine and hook everything back up.

first thing, hook up the dist.vacume advance to the ported side to the carb.if its hooked up to full vaccum, like straight to the intake, when you want the power,it cant advance any, because its advanced as far as it can.if you want to time it,just loosen the dist.and find your mark on the hormonic balancer, then hook up a timing light to number 1 plug and the other wire to the ground at the battery.then start your car and make sure its off fast idle and turn the dist.till the right mark shows up on the scale.but first thing i would check is make sure the vaccum advance is hooked to the carb.(ported side)so it can advance when you give the gas, then you have the power you need.hope this helps you.

your timing chain is about to jump time if it hasn't already. have the cover pulled off and replace it and it will be fine.
