it's another way of saying civil union or gay marriage

Legally the term "domestic partnership" is so broad a term that it not only includes same sex couples living in a committed and monogamous relationship, but it also includes any two people who live together and share all expenses of same. These two people can be related, platonic friends, unrelated roommates, gay, straight, same gender, opposite gender, mother/daughter, grandparent and parent, brother and sister...as long as they share all living expenses and finances and care for each others living needs such as health care, food, utilities...etc.

Civil Unions, refer to, mainly, same sex couples who have a committed relationship, usually of an emotional and physical kind. BUT these unions DO NOT afford equal marriage rights, protections and/or privileges.

Same sex Marriage is the ONLY type of legal recognition that would, if federally recognized, afford all the exact same legal protections, rights, responsibilities and privileges as any other type of legal marriages already do.

Domestic partnership means living in a committed relationship with another person and sharing household expenses. It can apply to gay couples or unmarried straight couples, but since the term common law marriage is exclusive to unmarried straight couples it usually refers to gay couples.

Domestic partnership's were created for two reasons:

1) For gay/lesbian/bi couples who are committed to each other but aren't allowed to legally marry

2) For straights who have been married, hated the institution, and refuse to be institutionalized again, but are still capable of committing themself to a relationship

FYI: It can also be for straights who are single, but also hate institutions (the food is terrible)

It just means that, as a couple, you live together. Gay or straight, it doesn't matter. You share te majority of the expenses, live together, just aren't married in the eyes of the law
