If he can put his nose out of the water he can breath and the holes on the side of his head are ears. Don't panic they are wonderful swimmers, after all the name should give it away.

Nile monitors love being in the water. The holes behind his eyes on the neck are ears. You need to buy a caresheet on them because it is apparent you are a beginner with monitors and you need to know a lot on them. They get immense in size mine is about 6 feet long. And one wrong move and careless mistake will result in a very nasty bite or a loss of a finger or two. Please get a care sheet or book on them as it may help you and him from a terrible accident. I am not trying to be a butt here but they are very basic questions you asked and you should have done this research before you bought him. a monitor is not a good pet for beginners. A book will help you answer alot of questions you may have on them. Like what to do if they clamp down on you. For instance a nile monitor fully grown requires a room, not an aquarium. Mine lives in a climate controlled greenhouse in the back yard with my columbian tegu, water monitor and emeral boa. They have a kiddy pool in there for water lounging. Oh and monitors do not fight to the death, they wrestle for breeding rights. Its quite an awesome scene to watch.

hi there
no... Nile monitors love water and like to have mud baths as well... our does the same thing... the holes on the side of their heads are the ears they have like pin head hole on their snouts that is their nostrils... also they have been know to go under water for some period of time .... specially when they feel threatened ... they normally live by the Nile river where it's wet and muddy ....All Niles are wild caught do to it is very hard to breed them ...it take 3 Niles 2 males and 1 female to get them to breed the males have to fight till either one gives up or dies then the female will except him.... our Nile is now about 12 + inches long and very healthy....
hope this helps ...check out our site for more info

most reptiles are really good swimmers but nile monitors are the best of the best so if possible get him a bigger tank where he can swim in instead of just sitting ,the two holes on the side of his head are his inner ears he can't really hear thing that are too far away but he can pick up vibrations from his soroundings, remember he has very sharp teeth so i would not advise you to clean his ears the water will wash away the dirt

Niles are fairly aquatic in nature. ( Nile River) They love to spend time in the water. If you look at your monitor's tail, you can see that it is blade shaped--this is an adaptation that has occurred because they spend so much time in the water--it helps them swim better. Their metabolisim is different than a mammal's, and they can spend much longer without taking a breath than you can. If you watch him, you will see that every few minutes he'll come to the surface so that his nose barely breaks the surface, breathe for a minute, then sink back down.

No Nile is going to drown himself. I had one and he would camp out in a big wash tub for hours and be perfectly happy doing so.

I had a water monitor, and not a nile, but they are tough creatures, and wily, so I wouldnt worry about it. If is a habit, and hes fine after each incident, must be ok...cool you care so much tho.
