He buys herbs thru a company called Star West. He has plastic boxes full of everything form Milk Thistle, Cats claw, and Echinacea to Horney goat weed.
He drinks about 3/4 liter of Vodka every 2 or so days and takes these herbs on top of it. I told him if he did not quit drinking, all of the herbs in the wold would not save him. Now he wants to fix me up a "formula". I think he is crazy. Am I missing something here?

Sounds like he has more than one addiction. With his consumption of vodka on a regular basis, his thought process is distorted...he is not thinking clearly... YES, that is crazy.
I truly care about your dilemma...I am sure with your profession, you have tried to tell him the harm he is doing, but sadly because you are a loved one, he isn't going to listen to you. He, and only HE..when HE hits rock bottom, be it health wise, law wise, or a loss of you will he seek professional help. My heart goes to you...please keep in touch. I am a good listener, been there, I can relate!

Welll there are certainly herbs that help the liver (some of them you listed in your question) and I'm sure your boyfriend's liver needs all the help it can get. But thinking that taking herbal supplements will fix the damage being done by 3/4 liter of vodka every couple of days is like thinking taking vitamin C will completely protect your lungs from smoking 3 packs of cigarettes a day...it might delay the problem awhile...but eventually it will catch up with him.

Plus you can remind him that his liver isn't the only thing being damaged by his alcoholism. There is his cardiovascular system, his kidneys, his digestive tract (especially the esophagus), his brain cells, etc.

Is that before or after he drives over to pick you up for a date? Dump him! He's probably a functional alcoholic ... meaning that he's able to function seemingly unimpaired by the alcohol, but he's actually completely impaired! Like the prospect of wrapping yourself around a telephone pole? You know it's a fact that the drunk behind the wheel usually gets out of their wrecked car nearly unscathed while the sober occupants die. That's because the sober ones see the accident unfolding and brace for impact, which in turn, causes massive injury. The drunk is so relaxed, they usually just slide around in their seat and get up and walk away! Nice, huh?

I am puzzled by the herbs, too. He is apparently trying to help himself, but has no control over the alcohol (or does he even want to stop the drinking?) I have heard that Al-Anon is a good program for families or those close to alcoholics. Maybe they could help you sort it out.
Good Luck!

He is trying to compensate for the damage that his alcohol consumption is doing. It may help to some extent but he's only prolonging the ill effects of drinking that much. Everything in moderation (alcohol & herbs) is best for him.

Kinda defeating the purpose, I think. If you are not just totally in love, I would consider looking else where. The sea is full and not all of them are poisoning their body with one thing and trying to cure it with another. Good luck to you.

There is a difference between an alcoholic and a heavy drinker.
