Slavery predates written history - i.e. it's been around longer than anyone knows. I don't know of any ancient culture in any part of the world that did not practice slavery in one form or another.
It has not ended. There are countries in Africa, for instance, where the practice is alive and well today.

Slavery can be dated as far back as early egyptian. well into 3000 bc.. however, anything prior to that is basicly lost history. Man came out of trees, konked woman in head and dragged her to cave, was probably the start of slavery.
Slavery is still running in modern day, africa, asia, brothels, pimps, various kinky type sex practices etc.

Slavery began in Ancient Rome when the rich decided to buy slaves from Africa and use them to produce crops to sell at a lower price. The trend started from there. It ended when the world felt that it was the wrong thing to do. probably before WWI
