I know this is probably an almost-stupid elementary question, but I can't find the answer anywhere . . . other than that Java is a language. Why would I want or need it? I don't play games on my computer. Is Java somehow connected to links? I recently received an update notice that was supposedly from Java, but a security pop-up told me the site's certificate was revoked (whatever that means). How can I tell if an update notice is really who it claims to be from? Thank you for helping me understand all this in whatever way you can!

Absolutely Yes you need Java..many websites you visit utilize java / java script, java makes the web and web based apps work fast.

also, if you are worried if the java update messages are bogus..
only update java from the "offee cup" icon in the system tray. a bubble window pops up and notifies you of the update. it will always be from http://www.java.com/en/

Yes you do need Java. You also want to make sure you have the very latest version of Java. Java has recently released it's latest version 1.6.0. You can download this version at this safe download site.

from a windows XP point of view, your operating system should be able to verify certificates, which means if its legal and registered it should not be a problem. And yes you need Java, and flash, and winzip.

If you needed java, you would know it. If you have a program that needs it, it will install it. If you visit a site that needs it, it will tell you if you don't have it.

Don't worry about it.
