Problem 7.64
You are flying to New York. You've been reading the in-flight magazine, which has an article about the physics of flying. You learned that the airflow over the wings creates a lift force that is always perpendicular to the wings. In level flight, the upward lift force exactly balances the downward weight force. The pilot comes on to say that, because of heavy traffic, the plane is going to circle the airport for a while. She says that you'll maintain a speed of 400 mph at an altitude of 20,000 ft. You start to wonder what the diameter of the plane's circle around the airport is. You notice that the pilot has banked the plane so that the wings are 10 degrees from horizontal. The safety card in the seatback pocket informs you that the plane's wing span is 250 ft.

What is the diameter of the airplane's path around the airport?

I am not going to solve it numerically because it involves a painful conversion of gravity constant, but here is the solution:

mg =m (400m/hr)^2 sin80/ (r cos80)

that is the centripetal force is equal to mv^2/r= F(lift) cos 80
and F(lift)sin80=mg.
It's funny that the rest of those numbers (wing span and height) are there for tease. don't forget that gravity should be converted to mi/hr^2 from m/s^2. Good luck!

If the motorbike proprietor leans in, yet keeps his velocity, the centrifugal tension will improve. This somewhat makes it extra basic to slip. the actual reason is that if the cycle is vertical, the only tension against the line is the burden of the cycle and rider. by ability of leaning in, the motorbike proprietor directs countless the centrifugal tension in direction of the line, increasing the frictional tension, which permits avert slipping.
