Scientists believe life is likely to exist if the conditions are right. (or: have existed if conditions were right).
Somehow they believe the conditions are only right if there is liquid water, and carbon. I'm sure not any fluid will do, although personally I don't believe it has to be water.
Mars still has water, and some of it may even be liquid right now (below the surface). Carbon is quite common, so two key ingredients for life are probably present right now.

It is not proven that there was bacteria. This is a reference to a disputed bacteria shaped something in an Antartica meteorite. The meteorite was dated at 4.5 billion years old and it is undisputed that it was once a piece of Mars. Contained within the meteorite were deposits of carbonite, CO3, which we on earth have only observed being deposited by water. Mars, then, had the only two components neccessary for life: water, heat.

They have found evidense of water once existing on Mars and some of the meteorites that fall to Earth from Mars contain "bacteria".

Because Mars used to have water (liquid water) and have few characteristics like Earth they also found bacteria and weird fossil like ocean or something

Because they believe they found plant matter and dry river beds which indicate there was once water if there is waser... there may have been life.

they have found ice which means water and bacteria which means something lived. just they think it was a long long time ago and is buried deep
