Yes, I understand that the people in these cultures won't read the petition, and quite frankly, wouldn't give a rat's *** anyway, but just the same, it's not feasible for most people to actually go there and tell them that to their faces, so what else can we do? Obviously, we can donate money to charities that *will* send people over there, but with so many charities wanting money, especially around this time of year, it's hard to choose. By signing the petition, we are for one thing making ourselves more aware of the situation, but also, hopefully, somebody somewhere will see it, and think to him or herself, "Gee, a lot of people seem to be opposed to this situation, maybe there's something I could do about it," and they, in turn, will take action. It takes less than a minute to sign the thing, and at the end of the day, you can say, for the record, "I am officially opposed to genital mutilation," and that has to count for something.

Americans can shout humanitarian rights all we want to but we are not the police of this world. Our values do not have to be theirs. be as appalled as you like, sign petitions, shout it to the rooftops. But remember, you live in America, a country based on Christian values brought over by European pilagers and rapists (and religious outcasts) who have along with their European brothers and sisters forced their opinions on various cultures. We're no better than those of other nationalities, cultures religions and races. How dare, you, we or anybody try to "fix" someone else's way of life, inhumane or not!

You can sign petitions until you're blue in the face and your fingers fall off. The primitive cultures in which genital cutting is practiced will never see your petition and would never pay any attention to it if they did. You are wasting time.

The petition was about genocide (the people getting slaughtered in Darfur), not genital cutting, but I signed it anyway.

I saw that it was about Darfur and went to the site to sign it, but then found out it was only about female victims of genocide, as if male victims of genocide in Darfur don't exist, so I surmised the owner of the petition was retarded and didn't sign.

yeah. And while we're at it, let's sign a petition to stop male circumcision and have all the lardheads in L.A. deforming themselves with soldering irons and ear stretchers and GOD knows what else put in bugbins where they belong and send missionaries to Africa to stop tribes from beating the women half to death while they dance around naked and beg for more on their brothers' coming of age day and to Papau New Guinea where they stick their heads into buckets of bulldog ants etc., etc.

You can't stop boneheaded, backward imbeciles from engaging in inexplicably culturally and religiously reinforced acts of idiocy, obviously; thousands of years of Civilization didn't even stamp them out among Westerners.

Does your culture not allow the genital cutting of MALE babies??? (circumcision)
Isn't it a major tenet of Christian religion/ Western culture that because marriage is only for producing babies that gays can't get married? These genital cuttings surely don't end reproduction capabilities.
Does your culture not allow divorce - which cuts at the HEART of its children?

I did, Mara. Thanks for doing SOMETHING. And for the people that criticized her for trying to bring awareness to this issue...what are YOU doing? Nothing except adopting a fatalistic attitude (nothing will help, so why try?) and it is this attitude that feeds evil like what is happening in Darfur. You think that kind of attitude makes you seem WISE? It just makes you seem very, very sad.

Don't think a petition will help...in some cultures it is religious.
