Our son over-watered our Christmas tree, soaking the tree skirt. The sopping wet tree-skirt has been sitting on our floor all day. Now there are dark water stains where the boards join together. Is there anything we can do about this besides refinishing the floor or replacing boards? It's a brand-new floor!

I realize im about 7 hours late here.... but... assuming you have genuine hardwood... you can try applying a little gentle heat to help remove the excess moisture.

Then, a little light sanding (and possibly apply some new stain) should help remove the majority of the stain. And I mean sanding IN THE GROOVE... NOT the whole board! This will take some patience and work... but you can do it. Take some sheet sandpaper, and fold it. Use this to sand inside the grooves. (no coarser than 100 grit to start...if necessary, finish it up with 180, or 220 grit... and make sure you get all the loose grit up out of the cracks, hehe) Once you have the darker area sanded back a bit.... see if you need to add any stain.. I cant tell you, yes or no, on this, without seeing the floor itself. When you are ready to "refinish" the sanded grooves... use painters tape to mask off the boards (I did say this was going to be a lot of work didnt I?).. and a can of Deft wood finish will provide the necessary top coat. Depending on whether you 'paint it in' with a sponge or brush, or buy the spray version, it may take a few coats to achieve the desired finish. Oh.. and make sure to get the appropriate gloss, hehehe...

Now... if... heaven forbid... you are calling laminate flooring 'hardwood' -- youve got a real problem... because the backer board is going to start swelling on you, as that moisture has soaked into it. If this is the case... plan on removing those pieces.

Good Luck!

you will have to sand it and the rest of the floor. Then have it stained and coated.

If it's in the wood your going to have to sand the spot with light sand paper.
