The most likely answer would be a defective belt. Since you have a rather old car, it's possible that you bought a belt that was sitting in storage for a while that might have suffered damage due to mishandling.
I've seen belts come from the factory that are defective. It's easy to overlook if you're not paying attention.
Another reason is that there might be too much tension on the belt. It's really difficult to say without inspecting the pulleys and surrounding components for damage.

When you installed your belt, did some oil get on the belt? Motor oil can weaken your belt.
Another cause would be a defective belt.
Since the belt snapped, there is a chance your engine might have suffered serious damage. In most engines, when the belt snaps, the pistons can hit the valves on the head. If the valves and pistons collided, then you need to rebuild your head.
Once you try to install a new belt, check the compression on your cylinders to make sure there is no damage.
Generally look for 100+PSI for a good cylinder.
A bad cylinder may only get around 75PSI or less.

I think thats the engine that the water pump runs off of the timing belt. If that is going out it would shed the belt real quick
check all the pulleys for wobble

You might need a new pully installed. I and a cashier at a auto store and usually I sit and watch the mahcanics and ask questions as to why, how and when they know when to do what and when.
