I 'm trying to figur out and buy an instrument which can detect the presence of voltage in a concealed wiring at my home.

The instrument should be used on the surface of the wall so that it can detect if any voltage leak is there and signal.

Ideal 956 or 958 will find Open spots in some underground and conduit situations, So i'm sure it will do what you're wanting to do seeing how its searching thru sheetrock, your break or leak(nicked wire) should read higher then any other spots, But you are looking at 700$ to 1,000$ for one of these meters

I dont know about voltage "leak" testers, but there are testers that you can put on the wall that detect live wires. In fact many stud finders now also show if you have AC electric near it.

Fluke makes clamp meters that you can clamp around a wire or conduit and get the voltage accurately. At home depot, they sell cheap detectors to show if you have voltage at a given spot on the wall.

NB*... do not pass the caveats of ability secure practices detrimental factors of disconnecting a demanding-under pressure out smoke detector. yet once you insist on taking a risky course then: a million. turn of the flexibility at your mains (this might turn off all electric powered ability on your place) 2. examine the educational to get rid of the canopy (oftentimes those would be moulded onto the plastic base) 3. as quickly as bumped off examine the label information as those could furnish further training 4. Use a screw motive force to detach the wires related to the alarm. this might disable the alarm and end the chirping. yet 5. you ought to climb up a manhole into the roof-area and tie off/terminate those wires at their source, and not go away them mendacity interior the roof. (oftentimes a qualified electrician's job) 6. you will ought to accomplish a little plaster paintings to fill interior the hollow you have as quickly as the smoke detector base plate is removed from ceiling.

I think you are looking for a "circut seeker" type device, which you would have to find the circut somewhere you could get to it, either at the panel or at an outlet or light in the room. you clamp one side of the signal sending unit to the wire and ground the other clip, turn on the sensor and you would be able to tell if there was a live circut in the ceiling. They are expensive, I wouldnt buy one for one single use.

The device is called a fluke and it is available at most electrical supply houses. Its not cheap, usually around 35 dollars but its a huge advantage when trying to find a hot wire.

before digging all contractors are required to check for buried wires. Some look like metal detectors some are hand held. Check ebay for wire detectors or West Meter or metalic stud detector
