I used the "you" in the introduction to tell a story.

2nd person singular is "you". 2nd person plural is "you". I wonder if you are confusing with 3rd person plural "they" in the sense of "people". Now you are confusing me.

If this is a formal essay, don't use 'you.' 'You' is for informal writing and if your teacher is strict, he or she won't like it. If the writing doesn't have to be formal, then you may use 'you.'

As for switching to 2nd person plural, it's fine as long as the 'you' is just in the introduction and is used for dramatic effect. Don't switch it for no reason though. Also, you can use the word 'one' instead of people, ie:

"One must treat others as one would like to be treated." or "Sometimes it is hard to look within oneself."

'One' can be used to express the idea that anyone could be switched with the word.

So to answer your question, don't switch if it's not for some kind of effect. Also, don't use 'you' in formal writing.

Hope I helped.

Second person plural is "we". "People" is 3rd person plural. Can you be more specific and write the sentences here?
