Not that this isn't an obvious answer but maybe you're fan is out. My laptop was over heating because of that. I had to take it back to Hewlett Packard and let them fix it. Now also, it could simply be because of all the activity. Surfing the web--sending messages---and typing can cause your computer to run hot all the time. Then all the fan does is circulate the hot air---it's perfectly normal in this case. Hope this helps you

The previous posters are right on! Laptops run hot, and the air vents can get blocked with dust. You can get a small computer vacuum quite inexpensively to keep them clean. Beware of using canned air; if you have a lot of dust it could blow it farther in instead of out.

There are laptop mats with cooling fans available. These provide more air circulating under and around the laptop. Try a search on a PC site, such as Tiger Direct, to get a look at some. I have one and I'm quite pleased with it.

It depends what laptop it is. If it is a Pentium 4 or core2duo or something of the like it is going to be hot no matter what. It has to disapate over 100w of heat. This is equivalent to holding a laptop sized box with a 100w+ lightbulb in it. The heat has to come out somewhere.

sounds to me like it's time to clean the computer...to much dust inside and the fan won't cool properly. They recommend compressed air to blow the dust out...I use a vacuum with a plastic end on it. Your going to have to take the outside cover off the computer to do this....make sure the computer is Unplugged from the wall first. be gentle and don't go breaking something.lol

If you have a lot of programs running in the background, the processor is constantly running. Longer running with more programs running (esp. Nortons) equals more heat. Either close out some of those programs you got in the system tray or shut the thing off....

Check your fans for dust buildup. If its a laptop put a vacuum hose of the fan and suck out the dust.
