An optimist belives that this is the best of all possible worlds, a pessimist agrees with him.

Actually there is an old story that illustrates the difference.

A child is taken to a room full lf wonderful toys. He sits down and starts to cry. When asked why he says, " I know someone is going to come and take them away from me."

Another child is taken out to the barn and thrown in a stable filled with horse crap. He immediately starts rooting around in it. When asked why he says "there must be a pony in here somewhere"

Optimism is having a positive outlook on any given situation while pessimism is the exact opposite. It is looking at every situation as if it couldn't possibly be joyous, like Scrooge.

A glass of water to the halfway point. Is the glass half full or half empty?

That is the one I hear ALL the time. You are an optimist if the glass is half full, and a pessimest if the glass is half empty.

In my opinion I think that is stupid. If you poured water up to the halfway point and that's it, it is half full because you just filled it. But if you had the glass full then drank half it is obviously going to be half empty. So what does that make me? Hahaha..

A famous one...
An island inhabited by people who have never seen a footwear....
is seen by an optimist as... "potential market with monopoly for sale of footwear !"
is seen by a pessimist as ... "no scope for marketing shoes, since there is no use or demand !"
