If it's still alive, it will go looking for food. Funny thing is these creatures are fairly elusive. They somehow know when food is in the vicinity. Place a snap trap (something you can get from Bunnings for under a dollar) near by. I have a lot of success with using those traps. I have used roast chicken pieces, or cheese. I usually wound strings around the food, loop it around the hook on the trap to ensure the rat/ mouse doesn't take the food away without triggering off the trap. If all else fails, how about a vacuum cleaner with an extended hose (ie. if it's dead)

Unscrew one of your vents and place a mouse trap inside. Put peanut butter on it, it's sticky and the mouse can't eat it without setting off the trap.
I wouldn't set out poison, because the mouse could eat it and die inside your vents. Then it will really stink.
My parents live in a mobile home and they have had the same problem. My mom found they were coming in around the piping to her washing machine. The hose that goes into the floor had a small hole and they were squeezing in through it. Maybe check around all your pipes and drains.
Don't call animal control. They will just tell you to set out traps and poison. Unless your house is over run with mice, they will not come out just for that.

If, it die, it will stinkth!
You need to run it out. May remove a vent and place a small cage over it and try Smoke or a garden hose to force it toward that vent.
Another, remove the vent and put a trap in there with peanut butter on it, tie a string so you have a way of pulling it out should it wrestle the trap away from the vent.

Haha, I the same problem with my hamster. He is an escape artist and he finds ways to slip away all the time. What you should do is: 1. Take about 4 buckets and place 2 inside and 2 outside. 2. Put the hamster's favorite food in the bucket. 3. Put a ramp up to the bucket that the hamster could climb up. 4. Once the hamster is inside the bucket it won't be able to get out. Make sure you have very good smelling food in the bucket. A wide assortment would be good.

It may not be a rat.It could be a mouse. I don't think it's in your air vent, but on it. They(mice and rats) use your vents as streets. If there is anyway you can get on the top of you vents? If so put out so De-con. I think you can put it in your vents too.

He will not live in your air vents. Set traps in the basement or crawl space. that is where they live.
