the e to 3 thing is simple, its leet speak, nerds feel cool when they use it (also its a code so that n00bs like you wont understand them). however, youre only at the tip of the ice burg with leet, trust me, its not just e they mess around with (I can type in pure leet, no roman letters, but I find its much easier to just type normally) For a quick example, leet speak written in leet speak is 1337 5|>33|<
but they call it leet (or 1337) for short
I've never seen the lowercase i thing. And if I saw a friend do it, I'd smack them silly and shout "whats wrong with you?! type it right!"
and i can never get every other letter capitalized, but when i see it it makes me really mad. why would you waste your time doing that? I've seen my sister do it, and she doesnt use the shift key, she uses the caps lock key, and I really dont see the point, i mean what if you messed up and had to go back and retype half of it? people need to grow up >.<

My opinion on that mode of writing is they probably think they're being clever, or even creative.
The alternating upper and lower case actually gives me a headache, so I can't look at it too long.
The bit about the 3 replacing the E, probably stems from when people played word games with calculators. How if you were to type 07734, the 4 on the calculator would be open at the top, so when you turned it upside down, it came out as hELLO.
But you've got me stumped on the lowercase 'i' thing. But if I were to hazard a guess, it probably goes back to the whole thinking they're being clever bit.

YES! I hate it too, but I actually prefer reading caps if I can.
The REASON behind it all is simply this - if your name is Joe and you want your name on a page (like myspace com).
And it just so happens that there is already a Joe on thier computers list.....
Then by changing Joe to Jo3, you could still have what you want.
Th3 PRob13m 1S that 5OM3 people think 1T 15 c00l t0 type that way on purpose, and they are VERY irritat1ng!
;) bye

it makes no sense to be irritated by how someone types.
People probably type in a manner they are comfy with, for the most part. Many want to type faster, so they shorten words.

People think that it's the new fad. I agree with you. It's quite annoying to try to read. Don't have any interest in it at all.
