My 4 year old son has just been diagnosed with a form of Austim called Aspergers. He is an amazing little boy. Yes he has a few social and behaviour problems but he is funny, caring & very very lovable.
I am glad you and your brother get along so well. Its just another proven case that people with autism are special :-)

My brother had four children, two with autism.

I work regularly with my 10 year old niece. She can say only a few words, but her vocabulary is improving. She is also using her few words more productively. Many autistics can say "juice" if you show them the juice, but have difficulty understanding they can come up to you & say "juice" to get you to pour some for you.

She has also opened up socially. Autistics are typically oblivious to other people in the room. She used to be that way to a degree. But now she wants my attention all the time.

I could go on for quite a while. She has brought great joy to my life in just the 2 and a half years since they moved to town. Other people don't understand it. People think I am the heroic one helping this "poor, damaged child." They don't know how much I get back. It's almost selfish.

YES!!
I first met somone with autism while i was studing for my a-levels, there was a girl in the school with autism and i offered to help out and stay with her during lunch time, i loved it.......

Then i saw an add in the paper asking for volunteers to help a boy with autism on the 'son-rise programme', now although the programme is finished i now work for the family providing respite care for the little boy.......

This job helped me get another job in respite work, so now i spend my weekend with two fantastic kids, who make my job so worth while, they cant talk but i know they appreciate me too, i can see it when they give me a smile, or hug me when i walk into the house.......

I want to set up my own respite business for children with autism, and although i have a few things to work out first i cant wait until i acheive my dream....What more could you want from a job?!

(sorry the answer was so long!!!)

My neices son was just diagnosed with Asperger's. He's 3. He can't look anyone in the eye. He only says one word at a time, but he can write the alphabet. He doesn't like to be held, but when someone is sad or upset, he will go to them and hold their hands.
