I don't know if the name was around that long ago but England is/was referred to as 'Blighty'.

EDIT: I just checked and Blighty has only been around since 19th Century. So it wouldn't have been known to the first colonists in America I'm afraid. It's derived from a Hindustani word meaning 'foreign' if you are interested.

I don't know a nickname but it used to be called Angleland or Land of the Angles after the barbarian tribe, the Angles.
