Schools have a lot of applications to process. Most colleges send their acceptance in the spring.

It really depends on the college. I would view the FAQ for admissions for the particular college you applied to. It should give you a picture of their time line. A program with a set deadline will generally not view applications until after that deadline (they are comparing you to everyone else that applied). Colleges with rolling admission will review it more quickly. Also know that in Dec most schools are winding down for the semester and lots of things are going on. It would not be uncommon for things to get more delayed around this time of year.

Most likely they review applications on a periodic cycle. They likely wait until a group come in and review them together, rather than just looking at one individually. Check the school's catalog or the FAQ on their website to find the schedule they use.
