I think it will be awesome! A pity I would not be around to travel there and maybe Mars too! I think we are heading in that direction and eventually we will meet other intergallactic travelers!Imagine the colors of the planets as seen from the moon, or from Mars! We have dared to dream this and it willl come to be!

It would not and should not be part of a government-sponsered program. Free outer space up for commercial (for profit) exploitation/homesteading and the people will follow. This is the only way ordinary folk will eventually get to colonize space.

Otherwise will will remain in low earth orbit, operating at a loss (which means your tax monies are funding it whether or not you yourself ever gets to go), with only elite scientific and military specialists ever getting that far.

On December 4, 2006, NASA announced plans for a permanent base on the Moon in order to prepare for a voyage to Mars. Construction of the base is scheduled to take approximately five years, with the first preliminary missions beginning by 2020. If successful, this would be the first permanent structure on the lunar surface, as well as the Moon's first "colony".

I wrote an essay on this:
Sounds like a very great idea filled with man possibilites, but I feel we should really focus on Mars. With us on the moon, a permanet base has very little use. The problems associated with it such as energy, supplies and waste removal are almost impossible to imagine. If we did establish this base, any and all attention focus that we had on Mars would be diverted.

Sounds fun, but almost like a huge waste of money if you ask me. :) Hope this helps.

Congress will never fund it. There have been plans for these things since the sixties and they all die the death of a thousand budget cuts.

Look what happened to "Space Station Freedom". Now called "the international space station" and its a pile of crap that barely stays up there. Its pieced together out of unused Soyuz modules and leftover space shuttle parts.

I question that a true colony is possible in such a place, with no air or water. But continuously occupied base, like the ones we have in Antarctica, yeah! So cool!
