Best to just avoid areas if you can that might put you in that kind of situation. And if you can't run as fast as you can. If you mace/pepper spray someone and they run out into the street and get hit by a car you would be held responsible.

Oh crime prevention, the lost art. Maybe a better question is why doesn't everybody take these simple steps to prevent or minimize violence.

1. If you anticipate violence go somewhere else
2. Never go alone.
3. Leave your macho ego at home
4. Don't confront, run like hell
5. Be aware of what is around you
6. Grow up in a family where the strongest value is love, participation and good decision making.
7. Respect your elders
8. Never blame others, never be late
9. Be willing to compromise
and finally in my top ten list
10. Insure that every person you form a relationship with has similar values.

Move on in peace and remember attitude is a choice.

Situational awareness is #1

If you are over 21 and live in a right to carry state you can get a concealed weapons permit. Most states with the notable exceptions of CA, NY and NJ are shall-issue, which means that any citizen who does not have a criminal record can get a permit. You will need to take state-approved training and probably submit fingerprints.

Be aware of your surroundings.
Don't go into places that you know are dangerous.
Don't go out at night alone.
If a situation looks dangerous, leave.
Don't be afraid to yell for help. BTW - the best thing to yell is "Fire!" People cannot seem to ignore someone yelling fire.
If someone approaches your car, DO NOT ROLL YOUR WINDOWS DOWN. If they look like they need help, call 9-1-1 for them, but don't allow them access to your vehicle.
If someone is robbing you, give up your money, wallet, purse, vehicle, etc. All of those things can be replaced. You cannot.

Be alert, build situational-awareness skills, and be prepared to bolt at a moment's notice.

Even so, luck plays a big part in how the cards are dealt. A stray from a drive-by can still ruin your day. Remember - #### happens!

And personally I carry a gun everywhere and keep mace on the door panell of my car.
