I read this question, saw the answer from the 4th person, thought good, that's it, signed off and was ready for bed when another bit of irony hit me... (The book definitely stays with the reader.)

That Elie Wiesel's father goes through all the hell with him and then dies within a few days of being liberated. (Might have been 24-48 hours difference - I can't remember the exacts.) I mean they were on their way to another camp so they wouldn't be found out, but of course, by then, it's too late. He just goes to sleep in the snow - the same thing he convinced his son not to do. Heartbreaking.

And there are so many other close calls - it's amazing. I think about the man crawling to the kettle for food during a raid, and he's the only one killed; the author's gold cap episode and what happens to the first dentist. Lots. Okay, I've said my piece. Thank you.

No way! I do have something else. In the beginning there's a man that people just put up with - they think he's odd. He disappears for a time from the town, and when he returns, he tells people about the atrocities going on in concentration camps. And the killer, of course, is that none of the town listened. They didn't believe or didn't want to believe. This book is FULL of what ifs. I sell books and keep finding copies of Night, which sell almost as fast as they are listed (good copies, that is.)

Night is Elie Wiesel's true story of his life during the holocaust, as a Jew. He talks of his family and lifestyle before and the devastation as he saw each member of his family taken away. He talks of the lack of humanity man showed to man. It is important because while this all happened, the world remained silent. His hope is that it never happens again. From Shmoop/Night

Well, one thing that is ironic about the author, is that after the Holocaust, Elie Wiesel was able to produce love, caring, and happiness towards other people when he was surrounded by death, hatred, and sadness for about 2 years. How he was able to do this I have no idea...Good luck on finding other ironic things!

im going to have to disagree with christmas baker *no offense* but Elie Wiesel did not "produce love, caring, and happiness towards other people when he was surrounded by death, hatred, and sadness for about 2 years. " he was doing what was nesicary to stay allive, he evntually lost some if not all of his faith in God, he never show signs of happiness for gods sake hes in Auschwitz, and it seems like he's dead on the inside, and its just human nature to do all possible to stay alive thats keeping him from death.

but some major irony is when he doesnt stay in the hostial instead he leaves the camp runnning through the snow to annother camp where his father dies of disintery, and later he finds out that if he and his dad had just have satyed in the hospital then they would have been rescued the very next day.

There are ironic undertones, like when Elie meets the girl from the camp, and then the genral irony of the holocaust in general.... but it's a very sad and moving story.

The ironic part, in my opinion is the fact that his dad, who had been fighting against death while in the camp ended up dying only days before they were liberated. Pretty ironic and sad that the dad gave up his fight when the fight was about to end.
