It is very important to have some sort of hierarchical system of occupations in society. There are occupations which require harder and more study and training than others and whoes work is more strenuous and involved then others. This in society is often reflected by the monetary rewards.
However in this society there are many weaknesses in this. For instance thought doctors are very important and are recognised as such, so are a host of consulting, beaurocratic, inefficiently run and mickey mouse occupations that are highly rewarded in society. Conversly there are occupations of absolute necessity that are looked down upon. We do need doctors, we do need garbos, we do not need most consultants, we do not need arts directors. Our society needs to reflect this. If all the consultants, polititians, beaurocrats and other floatsome disappeared now, no one would miss them. If all the garbos (garbage collectors) disappeard now, we'd notice at first and then wouldn't-we'd be all dead from disease. So thought we need hierarchies to reflect reality and human nature, we also need to be careful of the hierarchies we choose.

The more interesting question is "who is asking and why?" Do we measure by compensation? How about by benefit to humanity (do teachers give more benefit than CEOs); if we measure benefits provided, do we look at the arts as benefits and if so, do dancers rate higher than singers?Does a doctor do more by performing an operation on one person or an attorney winning a class action for a damaged group? Every time you get into hierarchical questions you first have to decide the basis or framework within which you want to work. What yardstick will be used? And, who will choose the yardstick. So the real answer is "No", all occupations have their supporters, their advocates. All have their detractors? Do politicians provide a benefit? If so, name three.

I don't think it's important but it will always happen because we tend to over categorize people, places, and things.
