So apparently only the strongest/smartest survived? Basically, I'm wondering if the competitive atmosphere in Europe led to its future colonial/military success?

The question demonstrates a complete misunderstanding of natural selection. Natural Selection does not operate at the level of the nation state.

Yes. You are cent percent right. It is Law of Nature only strongest and smartest survive in the world. This happens again and again in the History of mankind. Otherwise how do you expect small countries like England, Holland, France, Belgium , Spain and even Denmark could rule over countries like India for such a long time.
