I guess Saint Nicolas started it, I really not think he intended to, but, by giving to those in need, it sort of snow balled and I guess since he was the first to do this, everyone used the St. Nick/Santa Claus as a nickname, there are many ways of saying the name, depends on a person's language.
The link may help with some of the various names.

As I remember it, it was based on a gentleman of the cloth called Saint Nickolas, in Germany, who gave gifts to the poor children of his parish. How that became Santa Claus, I don't know, but Santa does mean saint and Claus is a german name.

The original story comes from St Nicolas who gave toys to needy children in his village. Well over the years, a few poeple wrote some poems and songs about him, and than coke discovered that it could be a great marketing tool, thus Santa is born!

Actually it was mentioned in the bible. Rev 2:6 God praised them for getting rid of it. It has been going on since the beginning of time and a long time before Jesus. Probably Satan the Devil who wants to be worshipped and he has kind of gotten more worship from it.
Who but God knows if you are good or bad?
They were saying in the physocology book it was down right dangerous. You take a child to the mall and set them on the lap of a perfect stranger and tell them to tell him what they want.
He is going to buy what you want and your selfish parents won't buy you. Teaches them to take gifts from strange looking men.
Go with Santa Clause. He doesn't know the difference between this guy and the next who offers them candy.
