fit in my 12 x 9 standard atx tower?
my atx mobo (a couple years old) is 12" wide, 9" tall. this board says 9 x 8, is this 9 down or 9 wide?

Usually, any atx will fit any atx tower. the real question is, did your tower create the correct screw holes for both atx and microatx. They usually do. If you notice a lot more holes in the mobo atx base than your mobo is using, it will probably work. If you google hard enough, you may be able to find a layout for the screw positions for both and compare to your case.

Usually microAtx motherboards fit in the standard ATX cases (check you case to see whether there are mounting holes to mount a smaller motherboard -- that will certainly tell you.
