Ok, this is how it works. Hyenas (fam: Hyenidae) and wolves (fam: Canidae) are not in the same family. They are not even in the same superfamily. Hyenas - superfam: Feloidea. Wolves - superfam: Canoidea. So yes, hyenas are closer related to cats than dogs. The classification status they share is at order level - order: Carnivora.
Crocodiles and alligators are also not from the same family. The former is from the fam. Crocodylidae and the latter from the fam. Alligatoridae. They share the same order: Crocodilia.
Some external differences between crocs and gators are that crocs have some protruding premolars and gators have more rounded snouts.
To Eric M: Hippo's are not more closely related to whales than other herbivores. Make sure of your facts, before stating them, friend.

Birdgirl is right. Believe it or not, Hyena's are more closely related to your house cat than a wolf or a dog. It's funny how looks can fool you. For example, The hippo which may appear to be related to a rhino or another herbivore of some sort is actually more closely related to Whales than any other animal.

Darn! Bird girl beats me to another answer that is right up my alley. She is absolutely correct, though.

PS so is Eric M.

Vango, I am a zoologist too and you are wrong. Molecular systematics and fossils have placed hippos closer to the cetaceans than other artiodactyls. This is not that new of evidence and you needed to be informed of such. So, Eric M. is correct. Closer to whales than pigs. E-mail me if you dispute this, as I see I can not e-mail you.
