Liberals do not want to ban cigarettes, but they want to ban public smoking, which is a good thing. I have done extensive studies on the effects of secondhand smoke on children, and have discovered that their attention spans suffer. Cotine (A breakdown of Nicotine in the body) is still found in a child's system two weeks after being exposed to secondhand smoke. An adult can walk away from secondhand smoke, but a child can't.
Marijuana will never be legal, because the government can't control sales; make profit off of taxing it (it is a weeds that grows easily almost anywhere); or put age limits on it.

Beats me.
For 2 years I lived in a largely liberal city in the Rockies where cigarette smoking was banned in public places and most of the city residents did not smoke cigarettes but they did have lots of marijuana available for immediate consumption.
Both tobacco and marijuana are natural substances but the former is somehow seen as more "dangerous to one's health' than the latter.

You are generalizing because not all liberals want pot legal but here goes....Cigarettes have no medicinal value. It is a fact that it causes numerous health problems, is highly addictive, and is expensive. Less than a century ago there were some doctors that recommended smoking to pregnant women.BAD!! We now no that it is horrible for pregnant women.
Marijuana has medicinal value. It has some negative effects from prolonged use such as short term memory and I forget what else becauseI used to smoke a lot of it. :)
The plant itself is highly useful as a food source and for clothing. It is much better than cotton in that it is more durable, and the crops are replenished faster. It is a much friendlier crop than cotton for other reasons too I just can't remember.
Personally I don't see the harm in marijuana being legal. In countries where it is legal it is used with respect and abused by some. Just like alcohol.

Where is my grass dude?
I personally as a liberal do not care where anyone smokes. I have the decency to keep my cigarette smoke away from others and will stand off to the side away from people when smoking in public, well when I used to smoke. I also felt bad smoking around children and if walking and smoking would hold the cigarette as far away from the child as possible until I was away from it.

Do you really think it is the "Liberals" that want to ban smoking? I don't think so. I am in the bay area and EVERYONE SMOKES over here. hey might have "green peace stickers on their car but they are sucking on cigarettes! It stinks over her too. Like tobacco road! Terrible. One will walk by you and looking real earthy but smelling real bad. All the Liberals and Democrats I've ever worked with were smokers. I think you got it wrong.

Is it possible that the liberals who want to ban smoking are against legalization and the the liberals that want to legalize are against banning smoking cigarettes? Or are liberals a homogenous bunch of wacky tabacky loving, lung cancer hating hypocrites?

Personally, I wonder why conservatives always ask questions that contain stupid, nonsensical, and patently false generalizations.
But someone else has answered the question. Tobacco kills 400,000 people per year. No deaths are attributed to marijuana.
But anyone who wants to prohibit either drug is woefully ignorant, whether they be a liberal, a conservative, or something else.
You can read the short history of the marijuana laws at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/History/whiteb1.htm It is funny and quite entertaining.
Then, if you want a better background in all these subjects, I recommend the Consumers Union Report on Licit and Illicit Drugs at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/studies/cu/cumenu.htm
You will find surprises on every page.
If you want even more information, you can find the full text of most of the major government commission reports at http://druglibrary.org/schaffer/Library/studies/studies.htm
As one final note, I find that people who ask these kinds of questions are invariably:
1) woefully ignorant of the subject. Ask them a few factual questions and you will find that they know absolutely nothing about it. They rely entirely on urban legend.
2) Deliberately ignorant. They don't want to know the facts. You might check your own reaction. Are you going to read any of the research linked? My first bet would be that you won't.

The problem with marijuana is that people smoking it tend to keep it longer in their lungs in order to get the full effects of it. I knew a woman who smoked marijuana on a daily basis. She lost one of her lungs.

liberals don't want to ban cigarettes, they just want to ban you forcing other people to breathe in the smoke. they would accept the same limitation on marijuana, as well as limits on driving and operating heavy machinery on marijuana similar to alcohol regulation.
