As an American who has been to India, I can tell you of the popular perception I came across:
We're all filthy rich and live lavish wonderful lifestyles.
Not true for me, but it's the Great American Myth in India. Also, if it's obvious that you are a foreigner, you are liable to stop traffic with everyone gawking at you.
It's incredibly fun, though. People are so hospitable, and it's my favorite country on the planet.

Indian people like Americans. You may find the perception in Pakistan is negative, but most of India has a positive perception.

Just like others in the World think. Americans are enterprising, hard working but highly money minded, but power hungry and spoiled people, who are yet to formulate cultural values. A Country which is made up of people all over the world who came with the only idea of making money. People from India also go there only for that purpose.
