I have been on birth control pills for about 3 months to regulate my period. I have also had chronic abdoman pain for about 1 yr and a half. They put me on this because they think i have cysts in my ovaries. Im scared that something might be wrong. I usually have this black blood for the first hour of my period then it turns red. This period isnt producing any red blood. Should i be worried?

No if the Dr's think that you have polycystic ovarian syndrome then this is a normal side effect of that. Blood is blue before oxygen hits it like in the veins in your arms and hands. Once it has more oxygen it turns red. The black or brown color may be a mix of blood and just vaginal mucus. It should be ok . If you begin bleeding heavily then talk to you dr.

Black blood usually means "old" blood. Chances are you have had some blood caught inside for a few days or weeks. It's nothing at all to worry about. When it doesn't come out right away, it turns darker and darker. I'm not sure if if occured because of having sex or if you are on the pill and did not take it correctly, that would have made you bleed and the blood stayed inside for a few days. Could happen for a few more days. I wouldn't worry.

No need to be worried, from what you have described. If "they" think you have cysts on your ovaries, and are having black blood, chances are, you do have cysts, giving you a condition called poly-cystic ovarian syndrome. (PCOS) Many times when you have cysts on your ovaries and have your period, you will bleed monthly, but w/o any ovulation. The dark blood is usually a sign that you are not ovulating.

You may want to question your doc. about testing you for this. But when treating PCOS, you are better off to see an endocrinologist.

Sounds like you've had a longer cycle or maybe your last period left some old blood behind. Not anything to worry too much about but keep track of it so you can tell your Dr at your next visit.

No...it just sounds like you are passing some old blood and it will look black like that. If you eventually pass normal looking blood, you are fine.
