No. NO fish can survive in bowls, not even bettas and especially not goldfish. They may live for a while, but they will die within a year and will never thrive.

Do you know what type of cichlids you have? I'm guessing they are blue haps

Anyway, those grow to 4-5" long and should be in a 30 gallon tank, at least, with a heater and a real, hang off the back filter.
You must get this, or they will not live long.
Look through local classifieds, you can frequently find such tanks for very cheap.

I dont know a whole lot about cichlids but my brother was looking to buy them and he was told not to because he only has a 3 foot tank. so it would have to be a very BIG bowl. besides wouldnt they be the same as tropical fish in the way they need a heater and filter and all that special care stuff.

Only if you want them to die a painful death...cichlids need 30+ gallons. Most cichlids require pristine water and weekly water changes to keep them happy, as well as tons of filtration. Cichlids are aggressive and need lots of space...keeping only two in a small space is sentencing the weaker one to death.

I think they are tropical fish, and therefore need a more advanced and stable environment to survive in. One with a filter, and a heater, at bare minimum. My brother has several of these fish, and judging by the way he cares for them, I would think they are a delicate fish. When in doubt, contact a fish store.

Have had two Cichlids in a bowl for 3 years. They are so smart and easy to care for. Forget this nonsense that fish freaks babble.. I've had tanks and filter systems fresh and salt.. etc.. then it just became too much work as I was in Law School... I gave them all away and got a couple bettas in SMALL bowls then put them one gallon bowls.. and then two cichlids.. life is EASY now. once a week dump the bowl and refill it with water .. no problem... The only fish I had a problem with were goldfish and they did fine but they are DIRTY fish and I needed to clean the bowl every day

They need some space. If you are talking about Jack dempseys they will get 6 or 8" long. They should have at least a 10 gallon tank. They also need air and filtration
