Everyone should initially be given respect--- regardless of power, position, or background....add in sex, or age, appearance, wealth, etc. To KEEP respect, one has to earn it--- i.e. BE respectable. And again, it is not the externals which make someone respectable or not, but the quality of the human being.

That depends on many different variables.

Is not showing a person in power some respect going to negatively impact your job, your safety, your financial stability, your own credibility?

Is showing a person in power some respect going to positively impact your job, your safety, your financial stability, your own credibility?

Do you, as a waiter, wait until your customer earns your respect by being courteous eaters to show them the respect of good service? Do they show their respect of your job, as the waiter, by tipping you before the meal?

The answer to both questions is: no.

The common denominator is money. You want to provide good service to earn the respect of the big tip. They want the good service to reward with a big tip.

What it boils down to is: What is going to be the consequences of showing or not showing respect.

A child should respect their parent (and the sacrifices that they make to raise them in this world) unconditionally.

One should respect the HUMANITY in each and every human being -- that means that one treats another with dignity ... and does not slam them or make remarks because of the color of their skin, their ethnicity/heritage, where they were born/raised, their sex, or even their religion (among other things).

Then ... in the workplace you need to earn your respect and that occurs as you work hard every day, and apply best efforts to the assignments you have to meet and make.

If it's your parents it is automatic. If it is the elderly, it is automatic. If it is a coworker, classmate, friend, then it has to be earned.
