Hi everyone,

I want to use my internet connection wireless from my laptop.
I don't have a wireless modem, but i have;
1 PC
1 laptop (wireless featured)
1 DSL modem (no wireless)

My question is;
if i buy an USB wireless adapter,
can i plug it to my PC and
share the LAN connection, (which comes from my DSL modem)
over the wireless connection, (which is supported by the USB wireless adapter)
to use it from my laptop, (which is wireless featured)
without using any other devices..? (such as a wireless modem or an acces point device)
-------if yes;
-------can any type of USB wireless adapter device be used for this?
--------------if no;
--------------what spesifications must the USB wireless adapter have according to do the job?
-------if no;
-------why?

and, is there any disadvantages of using the internet connection this way?..

Thank you all!..

As I said, I am not interested in buying a wireless router.
I just want to know about the USB wireless adapter, if it can do the job (as i described) or not.

You need to get a basic wireless router to act as an "access point". Simply plugging a wireless adapter into the PC wont do the trick, unless the adapter is made to function as an access point ($$$). Think client/server...same kind of relationship.

I know that you dont want to spend big bucks for a router. You dont have to. I see them all the time for $30 or so. Just shop the deals. You dont need any of the fancy features. Just make sure it also has an "ethernet" port to plug in the PC, as this would go between the DSL modem and the PC.

At home, the answer is NO unless you buy a wireless router. The router assigns0 IP addresses. The wireless USB stick can't connect without an access point.

On the other hand, Starbucks already has wireless access points. In return for a cup of java, you can rent an access point instead of buying one, so your wireless USB will work there.

BTW, buying the router is cheaper.

You need a wireless router which connects to your dsl modem. Then the DSL signal gets broadcasted with a wireless signal. Then whatever computer with either a wireless adapter or integrated wireless (if a laptop) can see the signal and connect to the network and use the internet that you are sharing

All you need is a wireless router. That will plug into the DSL modem and your PC will plug into the router. Your laptop will access the router via WI-FI (wireless)

You will want to configure the router so that you are using encription. That might require a passwork from your laptop to access, but it will keep neighbors and strangers from using your internet connection. Linksys is a good brand.

Yes it can be done, you have to a wireless router and installation is pretty simple. Once you're done , you've to setup connection for your laptop from your pc. This is done by going to the routers home page which is 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 and when you get there enter admin for the username and for the password type in password and from there you're in the router homepage.
