this is very common, and there's more than one explanation for it
Usually it's because you're afraid of being made fun of. There's also the fact that might be shy. Fear of talking and messing up. Or you think you're not cool enough, etc...

The general idea is that you're afraid of something-I don't know what it is, but you will if you think about how you act. Remember, always be yourself and don't try to imitate other people, be original. This doesn't mean you have to be a the most popular person in the school, a lot of those guys are posers you know-as long as you don't change who you are when you are around other people then you should be ok
If you're just shy, then the solution is gaining more confidence in yourself. Think: what's the worst that could happen? and in most cases, people will just laugh and it won't be a big deal. The bottom line is...don't be afraid to come out of the box

You are not the sum of what other people think you are.
You are you. And you know who you are.
The right way to be is simply to BE.
Best way to operate is take your attention off yourself and extravert it onto others and your environment.
Much better to be interested than to worry about being "interesting".
No reason to hide, but you wont find this out unless you stop hiding.

Be yourself at all times. No one really cares at school. They have the same problem.
