I've had 4 kids and i can tell you it hurt every time, not unbearable but yes it did hurt. Not because i cant handle pain either because i had 3 natural births with no pain relief so i do cope well with pain.

Just laying on the table with feet up hurts at 9 months..lol. everything hurts at 9 months :).

It might hurt a little when they go in but its over in a second.

just an FYI though that internals are not a reliable way to know when you are "ready" because people have sat at 5 cm's dialated for weeks and some go from 0 to 10 in a matter of minutes. Also, having a lot of internals increases the risk of bacteria getting up there.

In my opinion all internal examinations hurt but 9 mos is not more painful than any other time.

There is no point to doing internal exams except 1) To check to see if you are dilating with premature labour or 2) When you are in labour.

Dilation in the last month is a poor predictor of labour. Ask your doctor if there is really any reason to do it and I bet you he/she will admit there is not.

I just had my first one done last Wednesday.. and I'm 37 weeks..

I didn't know what to expect either.. and it didn't hurt at all.. it just feels like pressure.. and it's a little bit uncomfortable since the doctor presses on your stomach at the same time.. it only lasts seconds though.. so I wouldn't worry about it..

He lubes his fingers too.. don't worry! Ha Ha.

It is uncomfortable because they will check your cervix. Usually a doctor will start to do that at around 36 weeks, so it shouldn't be any different than other visits since you hit 36 weeks....

It doesn't hurt, but it is extremely uncomfortable. Basically the doctor with lube up his hand and shove it in so he can feel your cervix.
Sorry to be so blunt, but I wanted to be honest from my experience

It shouldn't hurt. It will be uncomfortable though. If it were to hurt, it wouldn't hurt near as bad as the contractions you are going to have.

it is no more uncomfortable than a pap smear A trick that makes it more comfortable is to wiggle your toes constantly while it is going on my midwife taught me that and it really works
