Rich Text Format - often called "RTF" - is a file format used by multiple computer programs - Microsoft Word, Correl WordPerfect, etc. - that allows documents written by one program (Microsoft Word) to be read by another - different program - like WordPerfect. In the "Save As..." dialog box, there's a list box that says "Files of type" or something to that effect. Click in that box, and scroll down until you see the "Rich Text Format" option.

Rich Text Format (RTF) allows users of multiple software packages to open a text file. So, if you're using Works or WordPerfect, the only way for someone with Word to open it is to have the file in RTF.

To save something as an RTF file, go to the "save as" command, and in the box below where you title the document, select Rich Text Format (.RTF). Then, it'll be ready to go.

Rich Text Format (RTF) is a standardized way to encode various text formatting properties, such as bold characters and typefaces, as well as document formatting and structures. By saving a document in RTF, you can open the file in many word processors and other RTF-aware software packages with much of its formatting left intact. Many word processing programs will allow you to save a document in RTF when you select Save As... .

You can find the specification for RTF at:

If you are using Word, go to File, then Save As.

You can type in a file name, and beneath that there should be a pull down box for "save as type".

Select rich text format.

Then hit save.

When you attach the file, you'll be looking for the file name and then .rtf, so instead of paper.doc, attach paper.rtf.

Good luck!
