What would you do? Would you sit there and read the labels and stare at your gift and leave an awkward silence before saying thank you? or do you go to the next gift right after saying thank you without even looking at the gift thoroughly? What do you say to the person to make it not awkward? I feel like I'm in those uncomfortble situations constantly and never know how to get rid of the awkward silence. So what is the most courteous and less awkward way to appreciate a gift?

I think you are thinking too much. Appreciating a gift should come natural..and if it doesn't, well that's not your fault. As long as you seem happy to be recieving the gift, then I'm sure whoever gave it to you would be satisfied.

Just think of the responce that you would like when you give a gift. You might want to practice a responce as well. It was hard for me to know what to do until I thought about what I would like when I gave a gift. Then when no one was around I pretended to get a gift and then "reacted" to it. When a person takes the time and money to get us something we should have the decency to make them feel good about it. Think of our reactions as a gift to them in return and try to make them feel appreciated and warm inside.

I look at the labels and such but say what I'm thinking. Like,"Oh it's a __________. And it can________" that way you fill the silence and it shows the person how much you like it. But don't take tooooo long.

Say, "Thank you" like you mean it, look it over for a minute, then move on. As long as you're sincere with your thanks, don't worry about being awkward.
