Will the computer still show codes if the check engine light has been turned off by a tuning programmer?

the codes may still show in the history but the current codes will be erased. it depends on what kind of scan tool you have. if you are trying to get an emissions test then you should clear the codes and if the light doesnt come back on in about thirty miles of driving then you are good. you can also go to autozone and they should scan the car for free just to be sure, and ask them to check the history codes.

If the your car has gone to 3 different shops and their code reader detected a fault with the same code and has been replaced with a new one then the problem may lye in the a faulty wire to or from the main computer. Depending on the code reader they were using may not have the capability to perform a function that will reset adaptation or monitor the suspected part. Some late model cars have the capability of flashing the prom chip in the computer that fixes any known bugs in the chip. I suggest taking the car to the GMC dealer because they have the proper test equipment to monitor and performed specific activation test to isolate the problem. Your chances of them finding the culprit is much likely than a shop that doesn't have the proper equipment. If they do pinpoint the problem in a timely fashion they will call u give an accurate estimate to repair it. And that's when u decide if it's not worth fixing. But give them a try. It beats financing a new car and keeping the extra funds for more important things. Good luck!

Yes, if the codes were not erased. No if they were.
I hope he didn't just take the check-eng. bulb out., that did not resolve anything but hide the problem.
Only fixing the problem will prevent the light to come on again, a good mechanic would erase all the memory codes in the computer after completing the repairs.
On cars 1996 and up, even a loose gas cap will make check-eng. light come on. Make sure that when you turn on the ignition switch to on, the check-eng. light is on and goes off after the eng. starts

Good luck, Carl

If you clear the codes all codes in the system at that moment will be erased. However, if the problem is not resolved or a new problem develops, as soon as that is detected another code will be stored causing the light to come back on.
