I recommend Regina Spektor, she's an amazing pianist and she has a beautiful voice.
Um, Maria Taylor and Orenda Fink are good. They collaborate sometimes under the name Azure Ray.
The Dresden Dolls is fronted by Amanda Palmer, another amazing pianist. I don't know how much you would go for the band's act, though.
Anything that involves Jenny Lewis (the bands Rilo Kiley and Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins).
Oh, and Bjork. I don't know how much you would go for her act, either. But in my opinion, she's one of the best.
Flyleaf sucks.

a great alternative band with female vocals is Tsunami Bomb
also Evanescence, the Donnas, Eisly.
