Personally I like Chinese Dwarf Hamsters because they are small and have a cute little stipe on their back. But that is just my opinion. Here is some info on the main breeds. A Picture URL is located under each breed name.
Syrian hamsters

A popular breed to keep, the Syrian hamster is the larger breed of hamster with a golden or beige coat, growing to about 18cm long. Syrian hamsters are very territorial and must be kept alone. They are nocturnal pets and will come out to play mostly at night, preferring to sleep most of the day - so make sure you have lots of toys and wheels for them to play with while you are asleep. Syrian hamsters are quite shy but after time will get used to their owner and are happy to be held.

Very small and quick, there are 3 main species of dwarf hamster that differ very slightly. If you choose to buy a dwarf hamster do remember that you may need to buy special cages and toys to accommodate their small size.
Chinese hamsters

Like the Syrian hamster, Chinese hamsters are quite territorial but can be kept together if they already know each other and have grown up together. They are long and thin hamsters with little stumpy tails, they grow to about 10-12 cm
Russian hamsters

Another species of dwarf, the Russian hamster can be identified by its short tail and furry feet. They are happier living in groups or pairs, rather than on their own and unlike other hamsters the male helps the female to bring up the litter so can remain in the cage with a pregnant female. Russian hamsters are happy to be held and are very friendly little hamsters; they grow to about 10-12 cm.
Roborovski hamsters

These hamsters are very small and cute, growing to only 5cm long! Roborovskis make great pets as they are friendly and docile and don't mind being handled, beware though because they are very fast and may proof difficult to catch if they escape.

I don't have a picture but I've owned many different breeds and my favorite was always the "teddy bear hamster" and to be honest, he lived twice as long as any other I've owned.
