It's more of an interactive sort of service. Even though to you, you are just getting a coffee - to them, you are getting something they have to make specifically and directly for you. And they have to make a lot for a lot of different people... so even if it's just "regular coffee" - it's still something completely different than what most other people ever get. For McDonalds/Burger King - I believe most sandwiches/fries/etc. are set out ahead of the time (at least during busy hours) so the food is not always made specifically and directly for you.
Dunkin Donuts, where I worked (blah college jobs), we got tips and I could make an extra $20 a night. When regulars come in, we usually have their drinks ready and their goodies bagged by the time they open their mouths to say hello. Non-regulars got the same service from us, we just didn't know what they wanted - but it's for that kind of dedication to our customers that the tip jar was always filled up by the end of a shift.
It's also a "thank you for the extra awesome service" thing.
Ummm.. yeah.

I did some research for, and it turns out, Starbucks coffee is only 28% more caffeine than regular brewed coffee. Most people think it's like double because of the strong, dark roasted flavor, but dark roasting diminishes some of the caffeine.
I agree that the size thing bothered me at first, I used to mess with them and just say, the middle size, rather than grande. At the end of the day, it just made the line take longer to get served. It's not the kid in the cap's fault that the company is messing with us.
I used to tip, but I agree with you there too. At McDonald's, I put my loose change (or at least the pennies and nickels) in their little charity donation containers on the counter. Doesn't make sense to do anything different at SB's. So, now I use a Starbucks auto refilling gift card, so i don't have to deal with cash there. No coins, no change, no tips. Speeds things up--which is the whole point of the coffee in the first place!

I LOVE Starbucks--for the coffee, and only the coffee. I think the service totally sucks, they're always sooo snooty in there. I am a server and would NOT tip the baristas. A server has to do a lot more than pour a cup of coffee. And we get $2.13 an hour, where baristas start out at 7. Big diff.

Doesn't matter if you call it a large or what not, people behind the counter know what you mean. As far as the tip jar, Starbucks offers a much higher level of service than does a Burger King or McDonald's. Those places are obviously fast food restaurants, where as Starbucks is not fast food and does not have that fast food feel to it. Starbucks offers legendary service and high quality products. The jar is there if you want to tip, if you don't then don't do so.

Starbucks goes by a little Italian (tall, grande, venti). i agree with you wholeheartedly that they have the best coffee in the world...At Starbucks it gets pretty hard to memorize all the different drinks to make, and most people that tip have enough money to do so after the fact that they paid a lot for their coffee. Starbucks is considered more of a cafe atmosphere like in Paris, where you would tip the waitor for fixing your espresso. McDonalds and Burgere King don't get tips because they don't ask for them and they would like to make your trip as fast as possible. With some people it takes to much time to put change in a jar. Places like Coldstone Creamery, people give tips for the hard work that goes into memorizing the combinations. I hope this helps.

The Tall, Grande, Venti thing is a MARKETING GIMMICK - it sounds pseudo-Italian and Howard Schultz probably thought it would make his company seem classier. I don't let it get to me, I just order what I want (and since I go to the same Starbucks every day, they already know what I'm going to order)
I leave a tip - what I get (Grande Mocha Frappuccino in a Venti Cup w/xtra Whipped Cream) costs $ 4.50 so I just give them a $ 5 and toss the two quarters in the tip jar. If you don't want to tip , just DON'T... you don't have to whine about it.

starbucks just sucks. the coffee there tastes no different than the coffee at mcdonalds, or maxwell house from the supermarket. it's just a status symbol to carry around a starbucks cup. i bet most people take the cups home, rinse them, and put their own coffee in it the next day. notice the ones with the starbucks cups are also the "label wearers".

I agree with you...even though America is known to be the BEST around the world..blah blah blah..it tends to "Steal" other State's traditional ideas....I am Italian, and my Macchiato's Cafe shop is similar to Starbuck's...which is also translated into an Italian Word...we are very courteous people willing to sale so many things, so we offer our customers certain shots, syrups, powders, milk, breads, sugars, etc. and Personally I suggest America leaves it to us...the Perfection of Coffee...don't get me wrong they prepare it as good as we do, (it's nothing out of this world to perform) but the way they impersonate us and try to persuade Americans its so No Italiano~!...well my friend, the next time you go just ask for the biggest cup and DONT tip...you are there to be given proper service (CUZ YOU ARE THE PAYING CUSTOMER....)come visit local Cafe Shops in Italy and you'll get an Idea of what I describe here to you...*wink*

the word tall is probably a mind thing... However, leaving a tip is a gesture of appreciation. If you don't appreciate someone being trained, on their feet all day and putting up with difficult customers... then don't leave a tip. Just remember, that's just a little extra for the college kid or the single parent smiling back at ya. You are welcome.
Be Blessed!
