StarWars.com is the main site run by LucasArts. Half the stuff you can checkout for free, but you have to pay a subscription (I think its $35/year) to access special stuff in the "Hyperspace" section (anything marked with a yellow "H" and movie reel).
There descriptions for all the main characters, vehicles, starships, species, locations, and organizations. It includes stuff from the 6 movies and the "Exapanded Universe" of comics, games, and novels.

Lucas has a Star Wars website that includes a "premium" pay section. I believe I recall seeing different alien characters described in one of the sections of that website. The site is Starwars.com and the premium service is called "hypoerspace".
Also, I'd look at Amazon.com for books in the Star Wars mode, one of which may be a character guide.

Go to www.starwars.com/databank
At the top it says "by category", scroll over that and select "species" (or characters, or creatures - depending on what you're looking for)
